Miley Cyrus Breaks Silence on Dolly Parton’s Death
Miley Cyrus is speaking out for the first time since the death of her godmother, Dolly Parton, sharing a heartfelt tribute on Instagram that reflected both the depth and the privacy of their decades-long bond.
“Our most sacred moments were private,” Cyrus wrote, “and they’ll stay there — behind the stage, beneath the glamour and between our hearts.”
The relationship traces back to Dolly’s friendship with Miley’s father, Billy Ray Cyrus, which began while the two were touring together.
As Dolly explained in an earlier interview, she and Billy Ray were especially close around the time his wife became pregnant with Miley — close enough that Dolly decided early on, “This has got to be my baby.”
That connection led to a role Dolly always described in specific terMs. “She doesn’t really let me call her a godmother,” Miley has said.
“She likes fairy godmother much better.” It’s a distinction Dolly maintained throughout their relationship, and one that captured something of how she approached the role — present and involved, but never in a conventional or fully public way.

The affection ran both directions. In past interviews, Dolly spoke about Miley with clear pride, describing their bond as a real connection and praising her goddaughter’s talent.
“I love Miley,” she said. “We’re very connected, and we sing great together. She’s so sweet, and I think she’s so gifted, and I’m just very proud of her.”
Miley, for her part, has often pointed to a broader lesson she took from Dolly’s example — one about not judging people by surface appearances, whether that meant “a book by its cover” or, as she’s put it more bluntly, by “its huge boobs and its big hair.”
