Bill Maher Destroys Democrats Over America’s Cancel Mob On Live TV

Liberals need a stand-your-ground law for cancel culture so that when the woke mob arrives over some ridiculous offense people will finally refuse to apologize.

Bill Maher delivered that line with the clarity of someone who has watched the ground shift beneath him for years.

He insists it is not he who has changed. It is a left now composed of a small contingent that has gone mental and a large contingent that refuses to call them out.

He will call them out. That, he notes with open irony, is why he has become a hero on Fox these days.

Everyone talks about cancel culture but almost no one confronts it the way Maher does.

He wasted no time turning on Democrats for building the very machine that now devours its own.

Republicans, he observed, have tried to appropriate the term to describe ordinary consequences for actual crimes.

That muddying of the waters is unfortunate because the real phenomenon is genuine, insane, and growing exponentially.

It is coming to every neighborhood. In an era when everyone is online, everyone is a public figure.

It is as if the entire country has been trapped in a horror movie with Wi-Fi.

Consider the case of a San Diego gas-and-electric worker who lost his job after a stranger reported him for making what the stranger claimed was a white-supremacist hand gesture from the window of his truck.

The worker is Latino. He was not making any such gesture. A working man destroyed by an internet accusation that did not match reality.

That single episode captures the modern cancel mob in miniature. Polling from the Cato Institute shows that sixty-two percent of Americans now fear sharing political opinions in public, the highest number ever recorded.

Even a majority of self-described Democrats report the same anxiety. Maher turned next to Hollywood.

Casting directors, he said, must stop listening to the casting police and return to the simple job of choosing the best actor for the role.

James Franco was selected to play Fidel Castro and immediately faced demands for a boycott on grounds of appropriation.

The critic making the demand is himself an actor who has portrayed Venetians, French characters, and Italian plumbers without sharing those backgrounds.

He is an actor. That is the entire point of the profession. People become actors precisely because they want to spend their lives being someone else.

Appropriating is not an unforgivable sin. It is the definition of the craft. Sean Penn once won an Oscar for playing Harvey Milk.

At the time the performance was praised as an act of solidarity. Eddie Redmayne won awards for portraying a transgender woman.

Both choices were once celebrated as courage. Now the same choices are treated as sins.

The rules change every year. Yesterday’s progressive milestone becomes today’s cancellation. Real acting has always been about pretending to be someone else.

That is why the jobs are called roles. When empathy itself is declared offensive, when the instruction becomes never even try to put yourself in another person’s shoes, liberalism is not being expanded.

It is being undone. A 1950s book in which a white man darkened his skin to understand the daily experience of Black Americans would today be reduced to a single charge of blackface.

The old liberal impulse was to walk a mile in another’s shoes. The new impulse is to forbid the attempt.

Maher calls that anti-liberal regression dressed up as inclusion. The ugliness reaches its lowest point when the mob goes after spouses.

Thousands of strangers attacked an actress online for the political positions of her husband, demanding she do better, questioning how she lives with herself, even citing a fictional divorce on a television show as evidence of her failure.

One prominent actor publicly shamed her for remaining silent while her husband supported a candidate the actor opposed.

Maher found the episode grotesque. Going after the wife is something even the mafia once avoided.

The liberals he grew up respecting never behaved this way. He distinguishes between liberals in theory and liberals in practice.

In theory they hate bullying. In practice they treat it as acceptable when they are the ones holding the head underwater.

In theory they are compassionate. In practice they cannot grasp the ordinary human dilemma of marriage, the necessity of swallowing certain differences for the sake of the partnership.

Marriage, he said, is like a bong. For it to work you have to take a few hits.

No couples counselor has ever advised screaming at each other on social media. Barack Obama and Bill Clinton both urged Democrats to stop scolding, shaming, and out-yelling.

They asked the party to meet people where they are and treat them with respect.

The elected officials largely understand that message. The howling activists on social media do not.

Those activists are the ones who give ordinary voters the ick when they hear the word liberal.

Until the real Democrats find the courage to shut down the loudest voices, the party will keep losing the people who actually have to work for a living.

Maher notes that lifelong liberals such as Bari Weiss are still never pure enough. Credentials that once conferred automatic membership now count for nothing if the person refuses the latest orthodoxy.

There is no finish line. Everyone remains one wrong sentence away from the liSt. Comedians admit they have been terrified of the same liSt. One performer confessed she lived in fear until she was canceled anyway and discovered that life continued.

The entire system runs on fear. Once the fear breaks, the system weakens. The oath Maher took was to comedy.

When one side supplies endless material, he will use it. The party of Roosevelt and Kennedy is turning into the party of LOL and WTF.

Members of Congress tweet demands to cancel rent, cancel mortgages, end policing, declare capitalism slavery, cancel Lincoln, cancel Dr. Seuss, teach children they are oppressors, and make Mr. Potato Head gender-neutral.

California passed a law requiring large retailers to maintain a non-gendered toy section. The legislative energy is spent on matters no working parent ever requested.

A banjo player from a popular band apologized and stepped away from the group after tweeting approval of an unapproved book.

Pain, the apology claimed, had been caused by the endorsement. Pain from a book. What happened to the freedom to read whatever one wants?

The same culture of snitching appears on both sides. The left digs through old social-media accounts.

The right encourages students to record professors. Snitch nation is bipartisan. It turns every citizen into an amateur secret policeman and elevates tattling into a virtue.

Colleges pride themselves on being safe spaces, but not for professors who might stretch young minds.

Comedy clubs have become unsafe for comedians whose job description is crossing the line. Exposing a joke that did not land does not make the exposer noble.

There is a difference between turning in the Unabomber and turning in the host of a variety show.

The first is about bombs. The second is about bombing. Maher refuses to live in Snitchlandia, a country where neighbors cannot be trusted, where everyone looks over a shoulder, where Republicans sue for livelihoods and Democrats fire people over Halloween costumes, after which everyone congratulates themselves on their courage.

More than eighty percent of Americans now report self-censoring online. That is not freedom. It is soft tyranny with better connectivity.

He did not create the cancel mob. He is one of the few public liberals still willing to name it.

Until the Democratic Party finally distances itself from its loudest and least serious wing, it will continue to lose every American who simply wants to work, laugh, and speak without a stranger and a laptop trying to end a career.

The country deserves better than Snitchlandia. Maher has said out loud what a great many people have been thinking in silence.
