For more than four decades, Vanna White has stood beside a rotating board of letters, turning them — and later simply touching them — while millions of Americans watched.

What most viewers never saw was the life running alongside that steady on-camera presence: sudden loss, a lawsuit against Hugh Hefner, a public pregnancy announcement followed by heartbreak, and a decades-long fight to be paid what she was worth, one that only became public knowledge in her fifth decade on television.

Vanna Marie White was born February 18, 1957, near North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Joan Marie Nicholas and biological father Miguel Angel Rosich, whose marriage ended when Vanna was a baby.

Her mother later married Herbert White Jr., a former real estate broker who raised her, gave her his last name, and remained close enough that Vanna called him daily just to say good morning.

Her childhood was modest and unglamorous — games, cards, and, according to her 1987 memoir “Vanna Speaks,” a genuine fondness for lizards and an ill-fated pet alligator named Mr. Bill that once caused a family scare when her younger brother briefly went missing near it.

After high school, White attended the Atlanta School of Fashion and Design, competed in the Miss Georgia USA pageant, and in 1979 moved to Los Angeles chasing an acting and television career — a move that came with real financial hardship.

She’s said she was once so short on money she slept without a bed, waited tables between auditions, and endured more than 100 unsuccessful commercial auditions before finally landing one after cracking a joke about a gynecologist appointment during casting.

Her mother died of ovarian cancer in the summer of 1980, pulling White briefly back to South Carolina in the middle of her career push.

The break that would define her life came in October 1982, when Susan Stafford left as Wheel of Fortune’s co-host.

White entered the search late as one of three finalists, and by her own account was so nervous during the audition that her knees and mouth trembled.

In a detail that’s since become well known among fans, Pat Sajak — the man who would spend more than 40 years beside her — later admitted in a 2000 interview that he’d actually argued for a different, more experienced candidate when show creator Merv Griffin leaned toward hiring White.

Griffin, however, was looking for warmth and natural on-screen chemistry rather than polish, and he got it: White was hired the day before Thanksgiving and became official co-host on December 13, 1982.

What followed was a genuine phenomenon.

Until the show computerized its puzzle board in 1997, White physically turned each letter tile by hand; after the switch, she needed only to touch the correct space, which allowed the show to tape a full week’s episodes in a single day.

She’s estimated to have worn more than 7,000 outfits over nearly forty years without ever repeating one, finally wearing a repeat look in September 2020.

Off camera she preferred jeans and T-shirts, and reportedly crocheted baby blankets for both her children between takes.

In 2013, Guinness World Records named her television’s most frequent clapper, an estimate later revised upward past 4.5 million claps over her career.

But 1986 brought the first of several devastating private losses that played out under public scrutiny.

White was engaged to actor John Gibson, known for “The Young and the Restless,” when he was killed on May 17, 1986, in a small plane crash near Van Nuys Airport.

White has said she first learned of the accident from the evening news, followed by a call requesting his dentist’s information for identification.

She took bereavement leave from the show, and has spoken candidly about tabloids printing cruel, fabricated stories in the aftermath rather than allowing her to grieve privately — including, she’s said, a headline suggesting she’d somehow “brought her lover back from the grave.”

Fan letters from people who’d experienced similar sudden losses, she’s said, helped her feel less alone during that period.

The following year brought a different kind of public battle.

Playboy published lingerie photos White had taken years earlier, in 1982, before she was famous and needed money — photos she has said she never authorized for publication.

She sued the magazine and Hugh Hefner for $5.2 million; Playboy claimed the timing was coordinated with her memoir’s release, which White denied, and both suits were ultimately dropped.

She addressed it publicly on “The Tonight Show,” advising others never to do anything they might later regret.

In 1993, she won a separate and legally significant case against Samsung, which had used a robot resembling her turning letters in an advertisement without her permission — a jury awarded her $43,000 in a case that helped establish legal precedent around personality rights.

White’s personal life continued to bring both joy and heartbreak through the 1990s and 2000s.

She married restaurant owner George Santo Pietro in 1990; a 1992 pregnancy announcement, delivered as an actual Wheel of Fortune puzzle solved by contestants, was followed shortly after by a miscarriage that White has described as devastating.

She went on to have two children with Santo Pietro — son Nikko, born in 1994, and daughter Gigi, born in 1997 — before the couple divorced amicably in 2002.

A later engagement to businessman Michael Kaye lasted from 2004 to 2006 without a wedding.

In 2012, a mutual friend introduced White to building developer John Donaldson at a barbecue she was hosting.

The relationship grew steadily over the following decade, with White repeatedly describing it in interviews as easy and drama-free — “he lets me be me, I let him be him,” as she put it.

On January 21, 2026, White surprised followers with an Instagram announcement that she and Donaldson had married in a private ceremony after nearly fourteen years together, writing simply: “Surprise! We got married!”

Reports surfaced in 2023 indicating White had earned roughly $3 million annually for eighteen years without a raise, and that she’d sought pay closer to parity with Sajak — a negotiation complicated by his announcement that same year that he’d be retiring as regular host, with Ryan Seacrest set to succeed him.

White ultimately extended her contract through the 2025–26 season regardless, staying on through the transition and continuing alongside Seacrest on the syndicated show as well as Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.

Sajak’s final episode aired on June 7, 2024, following which White recorded an emotional tribute reflecting on roughly 8,000 episodes together — the meals shared, the milestones, watching each other’s children grow up — describing him as family rather than romance, closing the loop on decades of speculation in the most direct terms she ever had.
