Patty Duke was born Anna Marie Duke on December 14, 1946, in New York. She entered show business as a child and became famous remarkably young. Her defining breakthrough came in The Miracle Worker, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1963 at only 16.

Soon afterward, The Patty Duke Show made her a household name.
