The Honey Fraud Hiding in Plain Sight—and the Only Two Choices That Still Tell the Truth
Honey is one of the most faked foods on the entire planet, and the numbers are staggering.
A 2023 European Commission investigation tested 147 honey samples imported into the EU and found that 46 percent were suspected of being adulterated with cheap sugar syrups—nearly half.
An FDA program testing imported honey has likewise found shipments adulterated with undeclared sweeteners.
The fraud is so widespread that researchers now routinely call honey one of the most counterfeited foods in the world, behind only a handful of products like olive oil.

The first and most common deception is ordinary cheap honey labeled simply “pure” that has been ultra-filtered.

Real Manuka contains high levels of methylglyoxal, the compound the MGO rating measures; that is exactly why counterfeiters target it and why the rating system exists.

Price itself is one of the most honest signals in the aisle.
Producing genuine single-origin raw honey has real costs—hives, equipment, seasonal harvesting, labor.
Industry analysts estimate legitimate raw honey cannot be profitably produced and sold below roughly $7 to $8 a pound at retail.
When honey is priced far below that floor the economics that support honest production are missing, and the same economics usually do not support honest sourcing either.
Deep-discount honey is more often than not heavily filtered, blended from opaque sources, or quietly cut with cheap syrup.
An implausibly low price is not a lucky deal; it is the single easiest red flag to spot, no laboratory required.

Flavored and infused honeys—hot honey, cinnamon, herb varieties—occupy a gray zone where added ingredients make adulteration easier to hide.
Once honey is blended with flavorings the taste and texture that might reveal a low-quality or syrup-cut base are masked.

It is often fresher, genuinely raw, and surprisingly competitive in price per pound, while keeping more of the money with the person doing the real work.

Look for pollen still present, a single named country, True Source certification when buying grocery brands, and a price that respects the real cost of production.
Treat a suspiciously low price as the clear warning it almost always is.
